    Fantastic Instrument for under $1,000!

Posted by Nick from Oakville on 15th Sep 2018

I purchased this instrument after my brother purchased a similar model (the Calcutta Standard Mahogany @ $799). I couldn't be happier! The build quality is very high, the tone is harmonically rich & loud and the setup from the maker was very good. The thing that truly amazes me is how can kala kendar sell such a high quality instrument for under $1,000? Back in 2007, I paid $1,100 (USD) for a sitar which does not compare to this instrument in quality or tone (I've sold that instrument). The finish and wood carvings on my sample are superb. I opted for the hard case which is necessary if you take your instrument out of your home. Don't take chances with a gig bag if you take your sitar on public transportation because the gourds used for sitars are fragile. They are not like the back of a guitar. In closing, this sitar is more than adequate for a professional sitarist. It is not just a student model.

Kanai Lal & Sons Sitars are top quality

This is a superbly finished instrument with fine finish on the fret-board, tuning knobs etc. The sound gourd is very finely carved. As to the tone - it really projects from the instrument. There are certainly finer concert quality instruments to be had at Kala Kendar, but as a starting sitar it meets all of my needs admirably.

    Loves it!

I am very pleased with my new sitar and enjoying it very much . It arrived safely, and after spending some time tuning it, I have been learning SaReGaMa and Alankars using video lessons and a book. Appearance, craftmanship, playability and sound are all excellent. I am of course only a beginner but the jawari seems very nicely done to my ear. I am eagerly awaiting some addtional learning materals ordered from Kala Kendar

    Just Perfect!

Posted by Asif on 9th Oct 2010

Hi Anil! Yes - everything is just perfect -- the sitar is lovely - it records very very well and is beautiful. Thank you for the fast shipping - it made it here for the session. One - thing -- just some care tips would be nice to keep it in perfect working order -- there is no one here to service or maintain sitars -- so any advice would be appreciated! Thanks again,
