Dayan, by Vijay Vhatkar (Kali)

I will first praise the packaging. It was packaged very well as it was my first concern. Next was the sound. It was a glorious, beautiful sound. Better than any dayan I've ever had and tried. My other concern was the tuning and if it would hold up. When I got it, it was perfectly tuned all around. But, it was not tuned to c#. When I checked it, it was a perfect c. I was surprised since it had c# written on the skin. It was minor and I knew how to tune myself. I love the size although I'm not sure if it was the correct one. I asked for 5.25, and when I measured it, it was 5.5. Not sure how it is meant to be measured other then from edge to edge, but it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I might like it more. I'm not sure if it will hold up long term, but it feels solid and very sturdy. I just might have to by a byan in the future to match the beauty of this one for my class.

I ordered a C# and it came A. I had to remove the dowels and tighten the strap a few times. I wasn't expecting it to be in tune, but geeze an "A"?

This is my 3rd tabla piece purchase from kalakendar made by *****. My 1st purchase was a 5.50 MD concert Dayan back in 2012, 2nd purchase was MD chrome concert Bayan size 9 inches sometime last year and now this master piece professional Dayan size 5.50 inches tuned to D I got today along with the 5.50 inches Benares tabla shell. Though the MD tabla size is a bit small than 5.50. Anyways the Dayan has a loud full sound because of the heavy weight that is every tabla players demand. This is a sweet and spirited instrument! With little effort it rings clear as a bell. The Kala Kendar team did a superlative job of sending a balanced and resonant head. Thank you! (my drum does seems a little smaller than the 5.5 that i ordered, but i'm still very satisfied.)

In my opinion, they don't get any better than than the MD professional dayan. Just picked up a 5.75" C#, and a 6" C. The sound is absolutely phenomenal. Thank you Mickey for your patience, and for making this possible.
